CFP Seeding Debate: Implications for the SEC, Big Ten, and College Football

A critical meeting on Tuesday will determine the seeding format for the 2025 College Football Playoff, pitting the SEC and Big Ten against the rest of college football. While the two power conferences want a straightforward seeding system (1-12), the ACC, Big 12, and other conferences prefer the current format that guarantees first-round byes to conference champions.

This debate carries significant implications. From 2026 onwards, the SEC and Big Ten have the power to unilaterally change the CFP format and revenue distribution. This power was granted to prevent them from forming their own association, taking the lucrative CFP with them.

The current format, however, has its flaws. Straight seeding would prioritize successful regular seasons, potentially placing a higher value on strength of schedule. Opponents argue that this system would heavily favor the SEC and Big Ten, whose champions would consistently occupy the top seeds.

The ACC, Big 12, and Group of Five conferences are also concerned about the financial impact. First-round byes guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals, which come with increased payouts. Moving to straight seeding could cost these conferences millions.

The SEC and Big Ten advocate for a system that mirrors most NCAA sports, emphasizing simplicity and consistency. They argue that a tournament-style format, similar to the highly successful NCAA men’s basketball tournament, would increase viewership and revenue through media deals and gambling.

A straight seed format would also simplify the selection process for the CFP committee. However, the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting remains uncertain, as unanimous agreement is needed to change the 2025 format. This meeting represents a crucial power struggle within college football, with potential long-term consequences for the sport’s landscape.
